My daughter, Mandy, and I composed this song when Craig of Marimbaworks asked us to try out a new tenor he had just built. We took turns layering lines until we had parts for a full song. Then Mandy spun it around with her arranging skills until we had this jazzy piece with fun duet breaks. We named it Kamba after a wild tortoise we encountered in the desert. The piece is in the key of C, and is perky, as we imagine our Kamba thinks of herself with every thoughtful step.

Beginning Marimba- Nhemamusasa (more)

Teachers: Wanda Walker

Cost: $28.00

Age Levels: Children, Adults

Skill Levels: Introductory/Beginner, Advanced Beginner

Topics: Marimba

Session Length
Session 1 (Fri 9:30 AM) 2 hours

Why wait? You're never too young to learn this deep and rich traditional song. This twist on "You're never too old to learn" is about Nhemamusasa sometimes being thought of as a song too advanced for beginners or children. Yet children in Zimbabwe sing this song while playing games. There's no limit to the appeal of this beautiful song, so why not share it early on? Two classic singing lines, taught first, become the foundation for the marimba parts and how to hook them. The arrangement begins with a clapping and singing game which teaches the connection between the two interweaving lines. The 3-against-2 pattern is used on marimba and hosho to help introduce mbira-style music.

Why wait? You're never too young to learn this deep and rich traditional song. This twist on "You're never too old to learn" is about Nhemamusasa sometimes being thought of as a song too advanced for beginners or children, yet children in Zimbabwe sing this song while playing games.

Music Educator Track

Music Educator Track- South African Choral Songs (more)

Teacher: Val Rogers

Cost: $28.00

Session Length
Session 2 (Fri 1:00 PM) 2 hours

Do you want to channel your student’s energy into the MUSIC? It’s not just the exciting rhythms, the interplay of parts, or the intriguing languages (including click sounds) that make this music so engaging. The physical actions that are integral to every song make it a uniquely captivating experience for teacher and student alike. Better yet, the songs can work for ANY combination of voices, in any number of contexts. Because it is primarily an orally-transmitted singing tradition, opportunities to learn the authentic music are rare. You’ll leave this session with a body-based knowledge of the structure and parts for several songs, plus notation or solfege maps to aid in recreating the songs in your classroom. Songbooks and CD/DVD learning tools will be available for order.
