Gumboot dancing originated in the mines and dockyards of South Africa, where workers entertained themselves with the only things available to them: their voices, hands, and rubber work boots (gumboots). This dynamic and powerful dance style consists of rhythmic slaps, claps, stomping and singing. We will learn a dance called Nia, brought to Canada by Themba Kunene.
Loose clothing, rubber boots (if you own them) and water.
