Chigwaya is the traditional Shona mbira piece required to call mermaid spirits, which bring health, wealth and protection. Both kushaura (leading) and kutsinhira (intertwining) parts will be taught, in the style played by Patience Chaitezvi, Endiby Makope and their family.

Student Materials

If you have a nyamaropa tuning mbira that is MBIRA workshop pitch (B), bring it. Mbiras will be provided. Grow out your thumbnails and right forefingernail, and/or by a set of picks at http://mbira.org/catalog.asp?cat=mbira-accessories (item 5000 or 5001) - to avoid sore thumbs.
