Joel Lindstrom

Joel's interest in Zimbabwean music was sparked by hearing Dumi Maraire perform at the WOW Hall in Eugene, Oregon in the late 1980's. It was an evening of amazing energy, with everyone singing together. He started seriously studying marimba in 1991 and then nyunga-nyunga. Joel started teaching marimba in 1994. In early 1993, he was blessed with a then-difficult-to-obtain mbira dzvadzimu when Zimbabwean ethnomusicologist, Keith Goddard, passed through town. He has been studying with mbira master, Cosmas Magaya, since his first visit to Eugene in 1998. At Cosmas' request, he began to teach mbira in 2001 or 2002. Joel's primary skills are as a teacher rather than as a performer. By profession, he is a high school physics, math and psychology teacher. Mbira is such a deep, soothing and energizing instrument. He is happy to be able to pass along this music.
